Who was Abdelhamid Abaaoud, suspected ringleader of Paris attack?

(CNN)Even in death, Abdelhamid Abaaoud was hard to pin down.

It took investigators a day to confirm the suspected ringleader of last week's terror attacks in Paris was dead.

He was killed in a police raid in the Paris suburb of Saint-Denis on Wednesday. His identity was confirmed via prints from fingers, palms and soles, the Paris prosecutor's office said Thursday.

Abaaoud's body was riddled with impact marks in the building where French police tactical units led Wednesday's assault. French officials did not say whether Abaaoud blew himself up or was shot by police.

Nathalie Gallant, an attorney for Abaaoud's father, spoke to CNN's Erin Burnett on Thursday and said Oman Abaaoud was "relieved" his son was dead. Gallant made a point to say he is not glad, but is relieved.

Omar Abaaoud, who lives in Morocco, told Gallant he thinks his son was a psychopath and a devil.

The Paris attacks, which killed 129, have shaken France and the world. But Abaaoud was not an unknown threat.

Tourists among 22 killed in apparent attack on Bangkok shrine

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN)A huge bomb explosion that appeared to target a popular Hindu shrine in central Bangkok killed at least 22 people Monday and wounded about 120 more, authorities said.

Twelve victims died at the scene, and the others died later at area hospitals, officials said.
"It was like this huge gust of wind and debris flying through you," recalled Sanjeev Vyas, a DJ from Mumbai, India, who was in the middle of the fray. "... And then I see bodies everywhere, there are cars on fire, there are bikes everywhere. People are screaming."

Police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thavornsiri Tuesday morning told Channel 3 that at least 22 people had been killed, marking the latest incremental uptick in the death toll.

Foreigners are among the casualties, with the Erawan Emergency Center saying that a Filipino and Chinese citizen were among those killed.

National police Chief Somyot Pumpanmuang said on state TV that Chinese tourists who had traveled to Thailand from the Philippines had been killed. The Chinese Embassy in Bangkok later confirmed the report, telling China's state-run Xinhua that three nationals had died in the blast, while another 15 Chinese tourists were injured, some seriously.

Hong Kong's Immigration Department reported that three residents were among the injured.

It's too early to say who orchestrated the attack, Somyot said there had been warnings about possible attacks, if not exactly when or where they might occur.

Capsized ship in China's Yangtze River: What we know

(CNN) ─ A luxury cruise liner, the "Dongfangzhixing" or Eastern Star, capsized late Monday in the waters of China's Yangtze River, with 456 passengers and crew on board.

The ship had been traveling from Nanjing, capital of east China's Jiangsu Province, to Chongqing city in the southwest.

As rescue workers scramble to find survivors and remains, what do we know about the tragedy so far?

Why did the ship sink?

 

At the moment, there is just speculation about the cause of the incident. The ship capsized around 9:30 p.m. June 1, during a storm in the section of the river that flows through Hubei's Jianli County, authorities said.

The captain and the chief engineer, who were among the at least 14 survivors of the incident, claimed that the ship sank after being caught in a "longjuanfeng" -- meaning cyclone or tornado -- reported the local Xinhua news agency.

The captain and the chief engineer said the ship capsized "within one or two minutes" of being trapped in extreme weather conditions, the China Daily newspaper reported. Wang Yangsheng, a senior official with the Yueyang Maritime Rescue Center, said that the incident happened "so fast that the captain did not even have the time to send out a distress signal," according to the newspaper.

However, Zhang Zuqiang, a senior official with the China Meteorological Administration, told Beijing News that he wasn't sure that there had been a cyclone, but that it had been raining heavily at the time.

The ship was not found to be overloaded and had enough life vests on board, according to theSouth China Morning Post (SCMP).

More details are set to emerge as the captain and chief engineer are taken into custody and questioned by police, according to state media.

Who is still missing?

 

Hundreds are missing from the wreck.

The SCMP also reported that officials believe five people may be trapped inside the ship's upturned hull.

"Rescuers knocked on the ship and received responses," the China Daily reported.

One elderly passenger was rescued, with state TV showing footage of rescuers cutting through the hull with an angle grinder.

Authorities say most of the passengers on board were senior citizens. Xinhua reported that of the 456 on board, 405 were passengers, five travel agency workers and 46 crew. State media had earlier reported that 458 people were on board.

Quartz claims that relatives of the missing passengers have been gathering outside the Xiehe Travel agency in Shanghai, which has closed its doors with a note saying that members of its staff are busy with the rescue efforts.

How difficult is it to reach the scene?

 

The sunken ship is about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) from the shore, where the river is around 15 meters (50 feet) deep, and China’s state-run broadcaster CCTV reported.

More than 3,000 rescue workers, including 2,100 soldiers, policemen and more than 1,000 civilians were involved in the salvage operation along with approximately 150 boats, the China Daily reported. But the rescue efforts are hampered by strong winds and heavy rain. Seven people swam to shore to alert the police at the time of the incident, it said.
